see the HKU website. a local master degree course in library and informaton management has been run for nearly a year. MSc in Library and Information Management the Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong. part time, 2 years to 4 years 8 modules. the total tuition fee: 90,000
MSc in LIM is the first local master degree course in HK. the recognition is surely better than CSU. since the program is held by the HKU, the local academic and public libraries will widely accept the qualification. however, if you just want to be a school librarian, a very basic qualification is enough as the EMB and the school management will not mean any post-graduate qualification in librarianship.
I found that there are two kinds of master degrees. One is called Master of Science in Library and Information Management and the other is Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management). What's the difference? Actually, I really want to work in the university or public libraries but I don't have any background on this field. Will it be better if I take the Diploma of Librarian first?
HKU- master of science in library and information management MSc (LIM): it is a postgraduate taught course held by the university of hong kong itself. the degree certificate is issued by the HKU. NO library experience is required for the admission. but the students need to attend evening or saturday lectures at the pokfulam campus as they are the students of the HKU. the lecture is once a week for each module. the workload and standard are higher than CSU. CSU- master of applied science in library and information management MAppSc (LIM): it is a distance program held by the charle sturt university (jointed with the hku space). the degree certificate is issued by the csu. a 4-year CSU post-graduate diploma or CSU bachelor in librarianship is required for the admission. students only attend several lectures for each module at the hku space centre. speaking honestly, HKU degree will be widely accepted than the CSU one. i have heard some university head librarians' complaints about the standard of their library staff who is holding the CSU degree. please be reminded that the EMB and school managements will not count any post-graduate degrees as a criteria for further promotion.
EMB is always the latest to recognize teachers' efforts to continuous learning (however, they promote continuous learning in their documents) CSU course is less heavy than the HKU is understandable but how about the money spend on the course?
據我所知中大那個圖書館學碩士(Master of Library and Information Science)是唯一一個American Library Association(ALA)承認的課程, CSU那個是Australian Library and Information Association(ALIA)承認, 但ALA會承認ALIA的Master course. 所以CSU的Master of Applied Science (Library and Information Management)是ALA間接承認為Librarian專業課程. 至於HKU的Master of Science in Library and Information Management暫時未得到任何圖書館協會承認啊
So, as what Tim mentioned, we're better enrolled the program offered by SPACE and CSU? As I'm also planning to earn a master degree in LIM, but still haven't decided yet. Anyone can give some more advices? A million thanks.
Dear TL and Tim I've found some useful information in ALA web sites( pls read the messages below), isn't it man that: although I study a course that isn't accredited by any natioanl body yet, but it doesn't affect my employment ( want to work in academic or public lib) in future? Anyone know? http://www.ala.org/ala/accreditation/accredfaq/faq.htm#q6 Q: I have a degree from a foreign institution. How can I find out if it is equivalent to an ALA-accredited master's? What courses or tests can I take to be "accredited?" A: Ultimately, it is up to the employer to determine whether or not to accept a foreign degree as equivalent to an ALA-accredited master's. There is no set of courses or tests to take to be "accredited." The ALA Office for Human Resource Development and Recruitment has identified agencies that, for a fee, will evaluate foreign credentials.
