Does any library have sub-categories of English fictions? Can you share the headings? Who is responsible for the categorizing process of the fiction? My library look like this: Fiction - mystery Fiction - sci fic (science fiction) Fiction - humour Fiction – horror (including ghost) Fiction - short stories Fiction - cartoon Fiction - human interest Fiction - adventure Fiction - fantasy Fiction - romance Fiction – thriller (includes spy / crime)
There are many different subject headings for fiction. I refer to Sears list when I do cataloguing but I also make up my own subject headings. In databases/metadata, I would assign several subject headings, as long as they deem to be relevant, to 1 title of fiction. As for "Who is responsible", I think the library staff, not the English dept., is more appropriate to handle this matter. Yet for reading level, you might want to consider Lexile framework (http://www.lexile.com/), or ask the English dept. to define the reading level for each English fiction book.
